Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Screening Available

Covenant Clinic Vascular Surgeon, Kamran Karimi, MD, FACS, will host a free Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Screening on Monday, September 16, 2013 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

An aortic aneurysm happens when an unusual bulge forms in the wall of the major blood vessel (aorta) that carries blood from your heart to important organs. If undetected/untreated, an abdominal aortic aneurysm that bursts can cause blood loss, shock or death.

This screening is open to both men and women, age 50 and older, that have one or more of the following risk factors:

• Smoking
• COPD/Emphysema
• Family history of aortic aneurysm
• Coronary artery disease
• History of cardiac bypass
• High cholesterol

The screening lasts about 15 minutes, and you are required to fast for 4 hours before your appointment. If follow-up is needed, Dr. Karimi’s office will send a letter to your primary care physician for further evaluation.

If you think you may be a candidate for this screening, talk to your primary care physician to discuss if you may be at high risk for AAA. Appointment is required. For questions or to schedule an appointment on the day of the screening, call (319) 272-5365. The screening will take place within the Covenant Professional Office Building, 2710 St. Francis Dr., Waterloo, in Covenant Clinic - Suite 410.
