Covenant Comprehensive Breast Center Shows Mammograms Save Lives

In the last 30 days, Covenant’s Comprehensive Breast Center has helped save lives through early detection. The Covenant mammography team discovered 16 new breast cancer cases from September 17 through October 17. In 2011, the center saw a total of 57 new cancer cases in the course of year. Finding 16 cases in one month is a record for the breast center.

These early detections were able to be made due to the dedicated mammographers that are on site all day, five days a week, catching cancer earlier than ever in the breast center.

“Those women who have come in consistently for their annual screening mammogram were diagnosed with early stage breast cancer, while those that hadn’t had their mammogram in 3 to 4 years were diagnosed with a more advanced stage breast cancer,” said Lisa Walker, Covenant Comprehensive Breast Center Supervisor. “To me that speaks volumes to the value of annual screening mammograms starting at age 40 – early detection does save lives.”

The center also experienced more scheduled mammograms in October 2012 than in 2011. The month is normally very busy for the breast center due to it being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and this year was no exception. Patient volume increased by more than 100 patients compared to last year.

Covenant’s Comprehensive Breast Center is accredited by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC). It is the only accredited breast care center in the Cedar Valley and offers a full array of services including mammograms, ultrasounds and breast biopsies.
