LaboratoryWheaton Franciscan Healthcare offers comprehensive Laboratory services to our patients at our facilities. Our highly skilled associates are responsible for performing laboratory tests efficiently and accurately to ensure high-quality patient care. Our lab performs over 786,000 tests per year. They also provide donor blood products to patients through the transfusion services department. Our laboratory offers a variety of different positions that require varying degrees of experience. Some of our opportunities include: - Lab Assistant – Performs phlebotomy (drawing blood), collects samples, processes specimens, and data entry. This position has a high level of interaction with patients and requires the ability to work in a fast paced environment with confidence. Experience is not required.
- Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) – Obtains proper specimens for testing, performs clinical testing and reviews data for clinical correlation, quality control testing on all analyzers and interprets results, and troubleshoots instrumentation. Must be a graduate of a 2 year MLT program and ASCP certification. Hawkeye Community College – MLT program
- Medical Technologist (MT) – Same job duties as an MLT but this position requires a 4 year degree and ASCP certification
- Histology Technician – Works closely with pathologist to process the tissue biopsies removed during surgery. The tissue is cut into very thin slices, mounted on slides, and stained with special dyes to make the cells’ details visible under the microscope.

Medical ClericalWheaton Franciscan Healthcare (WFH) has many opportunities for clerical candidates, with different levels of education and experience. As we continue the process of converting to Electronic Health Record, our clerical support team has been and will continue to play a vital role in this exciting evolution. Positions available in this area include: - Health Information Management Representative – assists with the transportation of medical charts from one area to the next. Ensure charts are complete and properly file.
- Clinic Receptionist – first point of contact for our patients in the doctor office setting.
- Patient Registration Representative – first point of contact for our patients in the hospital setting. This department is open 24 hours a day and 7 days a week.
- Coder – assigns codes to medical procedures to ensure that WFH gets reimbursed correctly from insurance companies.
- Transcriptionist – listens to the dictation that a physician makes during/after each patient and then enters it into electronic/paper form.
- Health Unit Coordinator – ensures the clerical sides of the nurse’s station run smoothly. Responsible for some transcription, inputting physician orders into the computer, etc.

Nursing Graduate or Returning to Acute Care Our Nurse Residency program offers the opportunity to discuss topics relevant to you and your practice with your peers. It is designed to ease your transition from student to practicing care giver. In addition to the Nurse Residency program, Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare has Clinical Nurse Specialists within our Medical-Surgical units, Maternal Child Health, and Intensive Care and Cardiology Units. These experienced professionals are a valuable resource to assist you as you provide exceptional and compassionate care to our patients and families. Career Ladder This program is designed for our RN staff who are recognized for leadership in the community and in the nursing profession. These professionals continually seek to expand their knowledge base and are active in various activities. Participation in the Career Ladder is voluntary and requires an application process. Nurses in the Career Ladder are awarded a compensation incentive and recognized accordingly throughout the organization. All of our nursing staff receive an extensive orientation before beginning their patient care duties. While some of our department names are standard, we have some areas at Covenant Medical Center that require some “definitions” as to the type of care provided on that unit. Resource Unit — Our Nursing Resource Unit supports virtually every area of the hospital. Nurses are trained on each medical-surgical unit and “float” according to patient census and organizational need. 2 General — Cardiology and Nephrology services are the focus of this 24 bed medical-surgical unit. This unit cares for patients requiring cardiac services including telemetry monitoring and post cardiac catheterization as well as acute inpatients that need dialysis. 3 General — While many cancer patients now receive care at their homes or in a hospice facility, 3 General offers inpatient Oncology care for those needing a heightened level of care. There are 25 beds on this floor. Patients who are admitted under multi-diagnosis are often cared for on this floor. 4 General — Orthopedic and Neurological surgical services are the center of this patient care area. Opened in 2004, there are 20 private, state of the art, wellness rooms on this unit. Each room has been designed with patient and family comfort in mind for the best patient care experience. 5 General — Post surgical patients receive their post-operative care on this 25 bed unit. At Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls, the Medical-Surgical Unit is comprised of 30 beds. This med-surg area is true to its name as it provides excellent patient care to a variety of medical and surgical patients as well as bariatric & ICU patients. Sartori is also home to our Senior Behavioral Health Unit. On this 15 bed unit, patients receive psychiatric care specifically designed for the population it serves. Covenant Clinic specialties include allergies, anesthesiology, cardiology, Convenient Care, family practice, pain management, counseling, gastroenterology, geriatrics, gynecology, endocrinology, internal medicine, nephrology, occupational health, oncology/hematology, orthopedics, otolaryngology (ENT), pediatrics, podiatry, psychiatry, surgery, urology and women’s health. Mercy Hospital is a 25-bed, full-service hospital that provides acute, skilled, and outpatient care to the community and surrounding area of Oelwein. Mercy Hospital’s role is to provide all the basic health care services needed in its community. Mercy provides general medical care, surgery, ambulatory care, long-term care and recovery. 
PharmacyThe Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare Pharmacy Department prides itself in providing outstanding pharmaceutical care to our inpatients, outpatients and associates through the services of both inpatient and retail pharmacies. Our closely knit department works with other ancillary departments and the medical staff to give care that puts our patients first.
