Former Volunteer Makes a Legacy Gift to Covenant Medical Center

Gordon and Maria Wilson were married on May 20, 1950, two years after friends
introduced them at a Waterloo restaurant. Gordon, a life-long resident of Waterloo, and Maria, a Polish immigrant, lived a simple life together.

Gordon served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean War. He was a counselor and history teacher in Dunkerton for 26 years, retiring in 1986. Separated from her family during World War II, Maria worked on a farm that supplied food to German soldiers. When the war ended she moved to Waterloo and worked various jobs around the community.

Gordon and Maria were dedicated volunteers at Covenant Medical Center for a combined 22 plus years and considered volunteering a way to give back to the community that had always been good to them. They appreciated the hospital’s work and considered volunteering together one of their many blessings.

Since Gordon’s passing on May 10, 2012, Maria has continued to reside in Waterloo.
Now, nearly 70 years after their life together began, Maria has made a six-figure gift to Covenant Foundation. The gift is being used to establish two endowment funds.

The Gordon and Maria Wilson Annual Endowment and the Gordon and Maria Wilson Education and Volunteer Services Endowment have been created from Maria Wilson's gift.

An endowment is a fund that serves as a permanent source of income. These two endowments will make a difference not only today, but for future projects and programs that will enhance health care in our community for years to come.

The Gordon and Maria Wilson Annual Endowment will benefit Covenant Foundation's annual campaign drives. The Gordon and Maria Wilson Education and Volunteer Services Endowment will make it possible for high school seniors pursuing health care careers to receive scholarships and also help with yearly projects designed to improve volunteer experiences at Covenant Medical Center.

Covenant Medical Center and the community hold a special place in Maria’s heart.

In Maria’s own words, “It’s a gift to the community where I was blessed by so many wonderful people. I feel blessed to have lived in Waterloo. It gave Gordon and me our jobs, our friends and each other. Waterloo gave use these wonderful gifts, so now the community will receive our love back through these endowments.”

The support of donors like Maria makes the work of Covenant Foundation possible. When someone makes an endowment gift, the gift is maintained in perpetuity and creates a lasting, meaningful difference.

Thank you Mrs. Wilson for your gift.
